Madness of Mayhem – 2025

MMF 2025 has been defined by fresh faces and renewed energy. This year’s festival witnessed an influx of new people discovering and embracing the sport of highlining. It is so wonderful to be able to share the space with other people and come alongside newcomers in their discovery of this festival.

From MMF 2024 being my first ever highline and festival experience to becoming one of the organisers for MMF 2025, this stellar event marks my first anniversary in a sport that holds a special place in my heart. I am stoked to see what it has in store for next year, but for now, let’s recap MMF 2025.

The weekend kicked off with the classic safety meeting with Swart, and from there, the gees just exploded. It was special to witness the excitement of the new faces going out on the lines for the first time, and people learning a new flow art or standing up on a park line for the first time. The packed itinerary guaranteed that you were never bored, but also not overwhelmed. The perfect balance between learning new skills and testing the physical limit of the body, and taking time to slow down and be in the moment. Encouraging the mind to let go of preconceived ideas and just go out and have fun. The maats around also made it so easy to just play like a kid again.

Weather-wise, MMF 2025 surpassed previous years with slightly fewer rainy days. There were times that the climbing crew had to settle for a cup of coffee instead, and the highliners settled for a game of cards. But that allowed for some lekka catch up and quality time with the tjoms. Saturday night’s storm made us fear the worst, but the bush doof still doofed. While all the activities were highlights, the Bush Doof stood out as one of the most enjoyed activities, with each DJ bringing their unique twist to the music, sharing their heart in a way that resonated deeply with everyone on the dance floor.

The last day of the fest ended with a flash fest, a stunning route bolted by William Pillay-Young in memory of Mira. It was sick to see all the psyched try-hard climbers gunning for their name next to First Ascentionist. Congratulations to Owen Filmalter for getting the First Ascent of Remembrance (23). Any climber is likely aware of how tough the Mayhem climbing is, and William did not come to play around either. For Owen, this is a great achievement at only 17 years old.

Something that I didn’t notice last year is how people can meet for a brief second in passing each on their way to do their own thing and then see each other at the fire in the evening, and proceed to spend a few hours just chatting about their day, what workshops they attended, what routes they climbed or what they did on the highline. By the end of the weekend, you are one maat richer. Those moments are so special to witness from an outside perspective.

MMF brings out a joy in everyone that cannot be explained, only experienced. I know firsthand what joy and passion get awakened within you the first time you attend MMF, and I hope every newcomer experiences that. For the ones who have been before may you be reminded of that. What I am sure of is that MMF is not your typical festival, but that is what makes it so special.  I’m certain everyone left with a new maat, a few bruises, many memories and someone else’s utensil.

If you missed MMF 2025, you missed an extraordinary experience. Everyone departed with precious memories that cannot be replaced. For those who weren’t there, I hope this piece inspires you to join next year. And if you were present, take a moment to reflect on what this festival taught you, what it illuminated, and what passions it awakened within you.

May this festival always bring you joy, self-acceptance, and psych for the sport of highlining and climbing.

Check you next year!
