Coming Home to Roost – Welcome Gen

Hey, I’m Gen

I was born and raised in Durban and moved up to Joburg to study Fine Arts at Wits. I finished that 4 year course in 2024 and am now doing an informal ceramics apprenticeship with Kim Sacks. I love music and dancing. I love to create and go adventuring in the wild.

I’ve tried out many sports in my life from ballet to touch rugby and ultimate frisbee, on the hunt to find my community and a situation that aligned with me and my priorities. I’ve found it now, in the climbing community and the sport that pushes your body and mind to the extremes in the most wonderful way. It also situates you in nature among the rocks, trees and mountains, right in the thick of that goodness we all feel so distant from.

My climbing journey started with, and through, Friends and Allies in the beginning of 2021. The place and people now feel like home and the gym is definitely a safe space for me. I got into it through my sister and my partner, and have been climbing for 4 years now,  making yearly trips to Rocklands which has, like so many others, become one of my favorite places in the world.

The stars aligned and it just seemed the right fit for me to give back to this community by working at FA and sharing my love and psych for the sport with the people.
